American journalist and political leader. Founded the New Yorker and New York Tribune. His periodicals strongly influenced the minds of the north. An antislavery advocate and unsuccessful presidential candidate (Nov 1872). ALS , 1p., 8vo., State of New York, Albany Aug 15, 1867. He writes to Hon. Geo. W. Wright on ornate letterhead of the Constitutional Convention. "Dear Sir, I cannot be in New York next Monday morning as we do not adjourn over this week but only on alternate Fridays to Monday evening. To the Monday following August 26th will ?? I will be with you." A fine example. |
