British merchant and yachtsman. In the Glasgow area in 1876 he opened a grocery store which dealt in tea, coffee, cocoa and assorted grocery products. It later became a huge chain throughout Great Britain. He later acquired a tea coffee and cocoa plantation in Ceylon, packing houses and factories in England and Chicago.
