DS., "Herbert Hoover", as Secretary of Commerce, 1 pg. 4 x 2 1Ž4 inch, (Washington), April 6, 1927. This historically unique, museum quality item is License # 1, issued to William P. MacCracken Jr., April, 1927 by the United States of America, Department of Commerce Aeronautic Branch. The license is the very first certificate issued for a private pilot's license. In addition to the license there is a PILOTS'S IDENTIFICATION CARD signed by MacCracken and dated April 6, 1927 identifying it as the ID card that accompanies Pilot's License no. 1.

WILLIAM P. MAC CRAKEN, JR. (1888-1969) was the first licensed US Pilot. He is considered an aviation pioneer just as Lindbergh and Wright, who were his personal acquaintances. MacCracken served as the Assistant Secretary of Commerce in 1926 and Assistant Secretary for Aeronautics in the Department of Commerce in 1927 during the Coolidge administration.

This license coincides with the passage of the Air Commerce Act of 1926 which established the Bureau of Aeronautics in the Commerce Department. It provided, for the first time, regulations for civil aviation. MacCracken was the first federal regulator of Aviation. He helped establish the first standards and regulations of federal aviation. A unique and historically significant piece of history. Certainly a critical piece to add to an important aviation collection. Condition is excellent. (#PVP)
