American financier, signer of the Declaration of Independence from Pennsylvania, signed
Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. Well known as the financier of the American Revolution, founded the
Bank of North America. U.S. Senator from PA, thus at signing. ALS, 1p., 8vo., North Hills, Dec. 18, 1797. Morris corresponds with his partner in Western land dealings, John Nicholson. In this correspondence he states: "Mr. John Richard Junior will make the statement of our French contract or rather of the Desmirrage of charges to be placed against their claim, you may safely admit Mr. Richard to your presence and I pray you to furnish him with all the papers..." On the verge of bankruptcy,inspection of papers probably had to be approved by both partners. (#STP2113) |
