Colonial administrator in America. Governor of Rhode Island, member
Continental Congress, signer of the Declaration of Independence. MDS, "Step Hopkins", 1p., oblong folio, English Colony of Rhode Island, February 27, 1762. An early colonial document appointing Abraham Hawkins to Captain of the Fourth Company in the Regiment raising in this Colony "to be employed in His Majesty's Service in North America...under his most sacred majesty; George the Third." This document is signed by Hopkins while serving as Governor and Captain General of the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in New England. The document is in somewhat fragile condition; folds have been reinforced with archival material. Countersigned by Henry Ward as Secretary. There is some paper loss at a fold in the center of the document approximately 1/2 x 1/2 of an inch. The seal is intact. A wonderful early piece of military Americana. (#STP2121) |
