Holograph, 6 x 3 3/4", envelope, made from one folded 4to. sheet, franked free, "Abr Baldwin", (March 1794) to "His Excellency George Mathews Esq. Augusta, Georgia." Abraham Baldwin is considered one of the most rare signers of the Constitution. This sample is in Excellent condition. (#STP2101)

AARON BURR (1756-1836) American political leader famous for this mortal duel with Alexander Hamilton in 1804.

ADS "A. Burr" 1p., 7 1/2 x 2 1/2 oblong, Albany, Feb 11, 1800. A check drawn from "cashier, of the Bank of Albany to pay I.V.Y or bearer, twenty five dollars." Usual cut cancellations not affecting signature.

During the presidential contest of 1800 the Republican Electoral College chose two candidates, one Thomas Jefferson and the other Aaron Burr. The vote was a tie and the decision of whom was to be President was not decided until early in 1801 by the House of Representatives. (#STP2119)

A Civil War date correspondence, written as Secretary of Treasury, authorizes Andrew Jameston, collector of Alexandra, VA, to submit estimates for the expenses incurred by "three sick seamen to whom marine hospital relief was extended." OLIVER ELLSWORTH (1745-1807) Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court who submitted to Congress the rules and amendments that became the Bill of Rights, delegate to the Continental Congress and member of the Constitutional Convention.

MDS, "O. Ellsworth", 1p., 8 1/4 x 4 1/4", Hanford, December 12, 1776. An order to pay 172 lbs. to Sandford Kingsbury of Windham, appointed captain of the fourth Battalion. The instructions are to "Charge the State". Very Good. (#STP2104)

WILLIAM FLOYD (1734-1821) American Revolutionary leader. Member of the Continental Congress, served four consecutive terms from 1775-1782. Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Member U.S. House of Representatives, officer in the militia of Suffolk County rising to the rank of major general.

MDS, 1p., 8 1/4 x 4" oblong, [Washington], June 30, 1778. A very wonderful historical revolutionary artifact. An affidavit signed by Floyd acknowledging his receipt of payment of fifty six dollars from Gerard Bancker, Treasurer, while he was a member of the Continental Congress "Full payment for services within certified". On the other side of this sheet is a AES of PIERRE VAN CORTLAND (1721-1814) descendant of the famous Van Cortland family, who was also a revolutionary, a member of Provincial convention and Council of Safety and Provincial Congress. Upon organization of NY State government he was chosen Lieutenant Governor of NY. In 1777 he was president of the Convention at Kingston which framed the first constitution of the State of NY. At this time Van Cortland issues a document stating "I hereby certify that William Floyd Esquire, hath attended the Senate as a member there of twenty eight days..." and thus is now officially able to accept his official government paycheck.

William Floyd was an active participant in the revolution. He lost his land to the British and spent all his efforts for the patriotic cause. He was the first representative from the state of New York at the first Congress.

This manuscript is a fine early representation of the development of the American government systems. A governmental issue of renumeration for the work by a political leader. Excellent. (#STP2106)

HORACE GREELEY (1811-1872) American journalist and political leader. Founded the New Yorker and New York Tribune. His periodicals strongly influenced the minds of the north. An antislavery advocate and unsuccessful presidential candidate (Nov 1872). ALS , 1p., 8vo., State of New York, Albany Aug 15, 1867. He writes to Hon. Geo. W. Wright on ornate letterhead of the Constitutional Convention. "Dear Sir, I cannot be in New York next Monday morning as we do not adjourn over this week but only on alternate Fridays to Monday evening. To the Monday following August 26th will ?? I will be with you." A fine example. (#STP)

DS, 1p., 8 1/2 x 3 1/2, oblong, New York, June 30, 1870. Check # 2975, To the County Treasurer of New York at the National Broadway Bank. The check mad out to Edward L Alker for $100.00, is drawn from the account of Salaries Judiciary. It is noted for salary as Officer Marine Court, June 1870. Also signed by co-ring member Richard B. HENRY W. HALLECK (1815-1872) Union general, American soldier, nicknamed 'Old Brains', due to his fine West Point education, and having been the author of Elements of Military Art and Science. Halleck spent most of the Civil War as Lincoln's military advisor and general in chief, he played a major role in the administration of the Civil War.

Signature, "H.W. Halleck", Major General, 2 3/4 x 1 1/2", matted and framed with a Johnson Fryd Co. engraving of Halleck in uniform. Two columns of original newspaper clippings dated May 31st 1862 entitled "Official report of Maj. General Halleck" are framed with it as well. Overall measures 19 x 21", a very fine piece, with great eye appeal. Excellent. (#STP2108)

WADE HAMPTON (1818-1902) American politician, Confederate officer and Brigadier general during the Civil War. He was engaged at Bull Run, Gettysburg and Upper Shenandoah. Second in command under J.E.B. Stuart at Gettysburg, commander of Confederate Cavalry after Stuart's death. Lieutenant general, governor of South Carolina and U.S. Senator. JOHN HANCOCK (1737-1793) American statesman, revolutionary politician, member Continental Congress, President of Continental Congress 1775-77. First signer of Declaration of Independence, then Governor of Massachusetts.

DS, 1p., 8 1/2 x 14", Council Chamber in Boston, March 16, 1789. Unusual, important historically significant document, signed twice by John Hancock and countersigned by JOHN AVERY. In the first portion of the document the Governor of Massachusetts directs the selectmen of the Town of Pittsfield to assemble to vote for Representatives to represent the district of Hampshire and Berkshire in the Congress of the United States of America.

"Selectmen of the Town of Pittsfield in the District of Hampshire and Berkshire...in a manner as the law directs for a Town-Meeting, to cause the freeholders and other inhabitants of the town of Pittsfield duly qualified to vote for Representatives to the General Court of this Commonwealth, to assemble on Monday, the thirtieth of March next, to give their votes for a Representative, who shall be an inhabitant of the district of Hampshire and Berkshire to represent the said district in the Congress of the UNITED STATES of AMERICA, to the Selectmen who shall preside at said Meeting, and you the said Selectmen or the major part of you, shall in open Town-Meeting, sort and count the votes, and form a list of persons voted for, with the number of votes for each person against his name, and shall make publick declaration thereof..."

The second portion of the document certifies the returns, names the representatives and is signed again by Hancock.

"These certify that the returns from the several towns within the district of Hampshire and Berkshire respecting the choice of a Representative, to represent the people thereof, in the Congress of the United States, have been examined agreeably to the resolution of the General Court, passed the twentieth of November 1788, by which it appears, that the honorable Theodore Sedgwick, Esquire, and Samuel Syman, Esq., have had the greatest number of votes in the returns from the said district, in which no person has been chosen. John Hancock..."

An interesting insight into the early procedures of selection of Representatives to Congress. Attractively framed, excellent. (#STP2110)

STEPHEN HOPKINS (1707-1785) Colonial administrator in America. Governor of Rhode Island, member Continental Congress, signer of the Declaration of Independence.

MDS, "Step Hopkins", 1p., oblong folio, English Colony of Rhode Island, February 27, 1762.

An early colonial document appointing Abraham Hawkins to Captain of the Fourth Company in the Regiment raising in this Colony "to be employed in His Majesty's Service in North America...under his most sacred majesty; George the Third." This document is signed by Hopkins while serving as Governor and Captain General of the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in New England. The document is in somewhat fragile condition; folds have been reinforced with archival material. Countersigned by Henry Ward as Secretary. There is some paper loss at a fold in the center of the document approximately 1/2 x 1/2 of an inch. The seal is intact. A wonderful early piece of military Americana. (#STP2121)

FRANCIS HOPKINSON (1737-1791) Signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey, delegate of the Continental Congress. Served as Treasurer of Loans from July 1778 to July 1781, balancing the finances of a new nation.

Partly printed DS, "Fr. Hopkinson", 1p., 8 x 3 1/2", Pennsylvania, October 19, 1779. A Revolutionary War sight draft #992, made out to James Wadsworth for sixty dollars. "Interest due on money borrowed by the United States." Excellent. (#STP2111)

SAMUEL HUNTINGTON (1731-1796) American Revolutionary, political leader, member Continental Congress, and its president (1779-81, 1783), signer of Declaration of Independence from Connecticut, governor of Connecticut. A skillful but quiet attorney devoted to his profession, never imagined himself in public life. However, in 1765 fueled by his indignation over British oppression in the form of the Stamp Act, Huntington forced himself into public life and pushed himself to the forefront and became a leader in the revolution. His influence rose steadily until his election as President of the Continental Congress, as at this writing.

DS, as President of the Continental Congress, 1p., on velum, 10 1/2 x 6 1/2", September 29, 1779, Philadelphia. The appointment of Samuel Burnham to Lieutenant in the Third Massachusetts Regiment in the Army of the United States. "Witness by his Excellency Samuel Huntington, Esquire, President of the Continental Congress of the United States of America...in the fourth year of our Independence." Entered in the war office and examined by the board and attested by and signed by BEN STODDERT (1751-1813). In 1776 Stoddert joined the Continental Army as captain of the cavalry and rose to the rank of major. Severely wounded at Brandywine unfit for active service he remained with the Army as Secretary of the Board of War until 1781. In May of 1798 he was appointed first secretary of the Navy. He was acting secretary of war after the resignation of James Henry until Dexter took charge. Stoddert's experience in the mercantile marine coupled with his tact industry and judgment were valuable in the formation of U.S. Naval forces.

Some toning due to age, totally intact, nice signature although ink does not adhere in all places. White paper seal intact. Very Good. (#STP2112)

GEORGE B. MCCLELLAN (1826-1885) American Army officer commissioned major general US Army at the outbreak of the Civil War. Commissioned major general in 1861, commanded division of the Potomac, in 1861 commissioned general in chief. Democratic candidate for President in election of 1864. Defeated by Lincoln.

Autograph signature on 4 x 5 1/2 inch souvenir autograph page "Presented to the French Fair with the compliments of Geo B. McClellan, Boston, April 1871." A fine bold signature. There is a stain which discolors a portion of the sheet, otherwise fine. (#STP2122)

ROBERT MORRIS (1734-1806) American financier, signer of the Declaration of Independence from Pennsylvania, signed Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. Well known as the financier of the American Revolution, founded the Bank of North America. U.S. Senator from PA, thus at signing.

ALS, 1p., 8vo., North Hills, Dec. 18, 1797. Morris corresponds with his partner in Western land dealings, John Nicholson. In this correspondence he states: "Mr. John Richard Junior will make the statement of our French contract or rather of the Desmirrage of charges to be placed against their claim, you may safely admit Mr. Richard to your presence and I pray you to furnish him with all the papers..." On the verge of bankruptcy,inspection of papers probably had to be approved by both partners. (#STP2113)

SAMUEL NELSON (1792-1873) Associate Justice US Supreme Court, chief justice NY Supreme court. ALS "S Nelson", 2pp., 12 mo., Albany, Oct 20, 1865.

Written to E W Stringham regarding a business trip to NY. Nelson expresses appreciation for the invitation to stay at Stringhams' home but must refuse because he expects "to do a good deal of work in a short time while there, which will make it necessary to take up my abode at the old place. He continues "We have had a long term here' another judge taking the criminal cases and I the civil, I leave here tomorrow for the city Judge S remaining to finish the business." Boldly penned and signed. Normal folds, otherwise very good. (#STP)

SAMUEL NELSON (1792-1873) American jurist, associate justice, Chief Justice NY Supreme Court, Associate justice US Supreme Court (1845-72) Fine ALS, "S. Nelson", 1 p., small 8 vo., Cooperstown, January 12, (18)70. Nelson writes of his plans to visit Washington to a fellow jurist, "I have delayed inviting you to see if it was possible for me to be with you on Friday. At this time Mrs. Nelson is a good deal better but not as I would wish. Therefore I cannot leave here till the last of next week; I have written to the Chief Justice to this effect today. A fine letter with good association. Excellent. (#STP2114)

CAESAR RODNEY (1728-1784) American revolutionary and patriot member Continental Congress 1774-76, 77-78. Signer of the Declaration of Independence, major general in Delaware militia in American Revolution. There are many different stories relating to Rodney's presence at the voting for the ratification of the Declaration. Each makes note of his sense of good timing or lack-there-of as he arrived in time to vote, but with no time to remove his boots or spurs which was the custom.

ADS., 1p., 10 1/4x 2 1/2", Dover, November 23, 1774. Received of Elias Wood the purchaser the sum of thirty pounds, twelve shillings and six pence principals and twenty pounds two shillings and five pence interest in full and is charge of the within mortgage, signed "Caesar Rodney." Fine sample clearly written in excellent condition. The item is framed with a copy of Rodney's biography. (#STP2123)

ROGER B. TANEY (1777-1864) American jurist, chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court who's name is closely associated with the decision in the Dread Scott case of 1857. Attorney, presidential advisor, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury.

ADS, "R.B. Taney", 2pp., 8 x 13", signed 3 times, Fredrick County, [MD], February 1807. A legal document, representing Christian Rarepack in a lawsuit against Samuel Hail, requiring payment of a debt of $70. Written in customary "legalese".

Taney signs in the text identifying himself as attorney and again at close of document. The third signature appears as a note to file "ipus copias". Fine early legal piece by one of the legal minds that made a permanent mark in history. Excellent. (#STP2115)

GIDEON WELLES (1802-1878) American politician and author. Editor and part owner of Hartford Times. Helped organize both the Republican party and Republican Newspaper (1856), U.S. secretary of Navy under Lincoln and Johnson. A driving force behind the increased effective Naval force of the U.S. in 1861. His administration introduced the ironclad class of vessels to the Navy.

LS, "G. Welles", 1p., 4to., Navy Department, Washington, April 20, 1866. To Maj. W.B. Stack, Master of Marine Corps, Welles informs him that agreeable to his request; "the Department authorizes the purchase of an additional cart for the Marine Post at Mare Island."
